INTERPRETATION

Exhibition book design

British Library, London

The British Library is the national library of the UK and holds over 13 million books.
Exhibitions at the iconic building in London are inspired by their collections, retail products are created for sale to visitors to the museum shop and online.

Exhibition book design: client brief

Each major exhibition is accompanied by a book as part of the interpretation, which reflects not only the art and artefacts on display but also creates a visual link to the branding of the exhibition. The books are packed with gorgeous images and explanatory essays and have a fine balance between narrative and visual impact. Deadlines are set in stone as the books have to be on the shelf when the exhibition opens.

Exhibition interpretation design: What we did

Goldust Design has designed a few exhibition books for The British Library, laying out 200-300 pages of glorious images, creating a clear visual hierachy, devising colour palettes and ensuring artwork is absolutely perfect and ready for press.

We are a huge fan of comics and graphic novels so really loved working on the Comics Unmasked exhibition book design. Spanning the history of comics over 250 years, from black and white caricatures in the 1800's to the vibrant colours of 1960s psychedelia, 1990's gothic graphic novels and modern day superheroes.

We chose a simple typographic style, lots of white space and a really bold colour palette to add punch and display the art at its best. The deadline was extremely tight we were delighted to not only create a beautiful, best-selling book in record time, but that it won The Broken Frontier award for Best Book on Comics!
