Cover design for self-published author

Surviving Schizophrenia

Although we usually work for large book publishers we find it exhilarating to work directly for self-published authors. Louise Gillett's gripping ebook memoir was already selling reasonably well and had fantastic reviews on Amazon but the cover needed improvement.

We had an open brief from Louise for her life story about her riches to rags childhood, traumatic family life, struggle with mental illness and incredible journey to recovery through love and motherhood.

We suggested the train track image as it works for on many levels. The little girl is Louise with her mother, the balancing represents helping each other through difficult family life. It appears to be a happy day although the threat of an oncoming train smashing into them both adds a dark message to this sunny image... her mothers alcoholism, Lousie's approaching mental illness or her abusive father...

We are thrilled that not only did Louise love the cover, nearly cried when she saw it and feels the woman looks just like her mother, but that online sales had an immediate improvement and it soared in the Amazon rankings.

That is what great design is meant to do and we find it so rewarding to see such direct results.
