Lockdown exhibition design

Updated: Dec 20, 2020

There has been lots of work going on behind closed doors at museums and galleries across the UK during lockdown and, for now at least, those in Tiers 1 and 2 have been able to safely re-open.

We have been busy working too, designing marketing materials and gallery interpretation for a newly-scheduled exhibition at the Russell-Cotes Museum & Art Gallery in Bournemouth, on the subject ‘Life in Lockdown’. The work is presented in themes such as ‘Working from home’, ‘Staycations’ and ‘Homeschooling’ and brings lesser-known paintings out of the archives for the public to see at last, through a lockdown lens.

The exhibition opened in October, only to close only a week later as the next lockdown was announced! The irony was not lost on us. For the last month these fantastic paintings have been hanging in an empty gallery waiting for their audience to return. Like us, hiding quietly in our homes, waiting for the chance to see each other again.

Exhibition poster design

The lead image for the show, used on posters and advertising, is ‘Mary’, a young child gazing at us bored and lonely from a messy room, representing all the children kept indoors during the pandemic when schools were closed, parks were out-of-bounds and outdoor time was limited. Find out more about our design work for the exhibition here.

Visit the exhibition

I’m delighted the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum is now open and this fantastic exhibition can meet its audience at last. You can go and see Mary, the other children and adults in these paintings and find staycation inspiration in the gorgeous Dorset landscapes on display. The historic house is also beautifully decorated for Christmas so, before Boris changes the covid Tiers again, it’s a great time to visit. Make sure you notice the gallery typography and wall colours while you're there!
